Artificial intelligence is certainly the most talked about topic of 2023, with the release of the latest version, ChatGPT-4, and the following rumour of a potential ChatGPT-5 by the end of the year.
A useful tool
ChatGPT is a language model developed by OpenAI, capable of generating human-like text. Specialized in conversation with human users, ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is the latest generation chatbot based on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). It uses a transformer-based architecture – deep learning model, a branch of ML – and is trained on a large dataset of text.
The future implications of ChatGPT and other similar AI tools are significant. These models have the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with computers, allowing for more natural and intuitive communication. They could also be used to automate tasks that require a human-level understanding of language, such as customer service, content creation, and translation. What is important to emphasize is the role these AIs play: they don't replace your work but they make it easier. Without knowing the grammar, you cannot know if the generated text is fluent and correct ; if you're not an experienced programmer, you can't figure out whether the suggested code is functional, working, or syntactically correct.

Areas of application
In finance, AI models like ChatGPT could be used to automate and streamline various processes, such as fraud detection, portfolio management and risk assessment. Furthermore, such language models in the future may also be able to analyze and generate financial reports, thus accelerating analysts’ workflow. Beyond the financial field, the development of AI could benefit another sector, healthcare. Language models will assist healthcare professionals in diagnosing diseases, developing overall treatment plans and tailor-made patient care. In many countries there is already an online consultancy service for preliminary diagnoses based on chatbots. With the progress achieved since the creation of OpenAI, AI will be able to provide increasingly adequate and specific answers to patients, helping them to understand their health conditions and thus assign them, based on their diagnosis, to the appropriate specialist. Moreover, thanks to the ability to analyze large databases in a short time, AI tools can help in medical research, identifying patterns and supporting the development of potential new treatments. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the growing adoption of AI will lead to save between 5% and 10% of US health care spending. That's between $200 billion and $360 billion a year.
Language models, as well as bringing benefits to writers, journalists and bloggers, will also revolutionize the IT sector, specifically programming. Thanks to the development and success of ChatGPT, OpenAI has developed variants of the famous chatbot, specialized in different areas, including code generation. In fact, there are already descendant models of ChatGPT-3, called Codex models, capable of understanding and generating code in many programming languages: Python, JavaScript, PHP, TypeScript, SQL and others.
In the mobility industry, Helbiz, one of the world's sharing solutions leading providers, specialized in electric mobility, has announced the implementation of the OpenAI technology, ChatGPT, in several departments of the company. This turning point represents for the company the initial phase of an ever-widening approach towards artificial intelligence. The ChatGPT integration aims to drastically improve the first contact with the customer and automate most of the standard tickets with a customized and human-like management, thus increasing customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. AI will bring an overall improvement to the whole service.

Developments
Microsoft's announcement is not unexpected: the company, founded by Bill Gates, will invest 10 billion dollars in OpenAI. The deal is part of a funding round, involving other investors, that would value OpenAI at $29 billion. Microsoft will effectively become OpenAI's largest shareholder: after reaching specific milestones, the company is expected to take a 49% stake.
The future of machine learning is promising and the only concerns raised by the development of this technology are about the rise of fake news and deepfakes. As models improve, it will become increasingly difficult to discern what is real and fake information, which could have serious implications for society. However, there are already research studies aimed at developing software capable of recognizing fakes; some important cases are the project of the Californian University of Riverside, in the United States, and Intel's "Real-time Deepfake Detector" research. Both studies aim to detect the presence of fake faces in video material through heat and blood flow analysis.
The future is AI
During the past years, the total amount of data created has soared, mostly due to the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT). The data market is therefore growing dramatically and, according to the latest estimates, is going to reach a value of $103 billion by 2027. Here are some figures about the world of data:
- Businesses generate approximately 2,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes of data per day.
- 97.2% of companies invest in AI and Big Data.
While the numbers speak for themselves, companies struggle to keep up with the ceaseless creation of new data:
- About 95% of companies report an inability to understand and manage unstructured data.
- Only about 26% of companies say they have achieved a data-driven culture.
