JOBS OF THE FUTURE: A GUIDE FOR GEN Z (AND FOR PARENTS)

For years, we’ve heard the same old refrain: 'Today’s youth don't want to do anything.' That’s simply not true. It’s a convenient simplification, but it’s profoundly wrong.

The truth is quite different: our children have realized they can afford to choose—far more than we could 30 or 40 years ago. They grew up in smaller families, often as only children or with one sibling. They’ve received more attention, more listening, and more opportunities. Above all, they were born into a world where paths are no longer few, linear, and forced, but multiple, fluid, and constantly evolving.

This isn't a lack of drive. It is awareness.

A world changing too fast for 'blind' choices.

There is one decisive factor that we, as parents, cannot ignore: technology. The job market is evolving at a speed that makes it nearly impossible for an 18-year-old to choose a career 'for life.' New professions are born while others vanish, and entire sectors are transformed within just a few years. According to World Economic Forum estimates, 65% of children currently in primary school will end up working in jobs that do not yet exist—and that we may not even be able to imagine.

Today, with the rise of Artificial Intelligence, forecasting the future has become even more challenging. While it is true that AI will create millions of new opportunities, it will also transform existing roles, requiring continuous upskilling for 59% of the global workforce by 2030.

Asking a young person today to decide immediately what they will do for the rest of their life is unrealistic. It is like asking them to predict the future—and they know it. However, we can foresee certain trends: studies indicate strong growth in fields such as Technology (AI, Big Data, Cybersecurity, Software Development), Green Transition (renewable energy, sustainability), Healthcare (biotechnology, nursing), and Personal Services.

The automation of tasks will demand a significant shift toward specialized roles. While technology is expected to result in a net positive gain of millions of jobs globally, the workforce must be prepared for a reality defined by constant evolution and specialized expertise.

Today, Strategic Skills Matter More Than Titles
It is from this understanding that programs like Management & Emerging Technologies by Geeks Academy Europe are born. This international, bilingual (Italian-English) path prepares students for the most in-demand digital professions. A multi-specialization two-year program covering AI & Data Analytics, Cybersecurity & Cloud, and Blockchain & Metaverse, including a Study Experience in London. A solid journey that merges technical and managerial expertise for a concrete professional future—with the added opportunity to earn Cambridge Framework certifications through our partnership with The British Centre Group school network.

These programs don’t force young people to choose one 'final' technology; instead, they teach them how to thrive amidst change. Today, the truly decisive skills are strategic:

  • English proficiency, to navigate a globalized world.
  • Soft skills, such as teamwork, communication, and leadership.
  • The right mindset: entrepreneurship, accountability, and decision-making.

These are the foundations. Upon this bedrock, students can build rock-solid technical expertise in Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, and Software Development.

People first. Technology second.
Never the other way around. Growth also means real-world experience. Today, a study program cannot be limited to the classroom. It must offer genuine experiences that help young people grow as individuals even before they grow as professionals.

Studying abroad, engaging with different cultures, using English in daily life, and stepping out of one's comfort zone: this is why programs like Global Tech Mobility—with study periods in London—are not 'extras.' They are a fundamental part of their education. Because autonomy cannot be taught; it must be lived. They don’t reject hard work. They reject being taken for granted. There is one final point, perhaps the most misunderstood. Today’s youth do not reject effort.

They do not reject 'paying their dues' or making sacrifices. What they reject is the idea of sacrificing themselves without a clear agreement. They are willing to commit, to gain experience, and to 'learn the ropes,' but within a defined timeframe—and with the goal of growing, learning, and ultimately making their own contribution. This is a generation that demands transparency, respect, and purpose. And, honestly, that is not an unfair demand.

Our role as parents today Being a parent today doesn’t mean choosing for them. It means helping them choose better. It means providing the tools, the vision, and the opportunities. It means empowering them to build their own future with competence and dignity.

When a child finds their own path, it isn’t just their victory.

It is ours, too.
